![]() ![]() I'm sure it wouldn't be perfect because 50/60 cycle noise isn't the only thing single coils pickups pick up (they're literally antennas), but it might be better than not doing it. I haven't ever done this before so I'm not sure how well it would work, but if you're using a recording program, you might be able to take a sample of the noise, shift the phase 180 degrees, copy and paste it so it's as long as the whole track, and add it to the track to cancel out the hum. The noise will still be in the signal when you're playing, but you'll just be muted when you aren't. You can get hum canceling jazz pickups that are basically split humbuckers (like p-bass pickups, but lined up in the came case), but they do change the sound a bit. The greater the difference between the level of your pickup signals, the greater the noise. However, when you turn the volume down on only one pickup, the level of noise gets turned down with it so it doesn't get completely canceled out. The noise get's picked up equally by both pickups, but it's opposite in terms of polarity so it cancels out when the signals get combined. The two pickups are wound opposite directions and their magnetic fields are reversed so they act like a humbucker together. It's intrinsic to the design of Jazz basses. I didn't see a spectrogram in the video, but I don't need it to tell you the noise is centered around either 50 or 60Hz, depending on which is used to deliver AC electricity in your country. Similarly, please send any comments or critiques to the moderators. When I decided to get a jazz bass, I knew I wanted stacked knobs. Also I like the look of concentric knobs. I played both and really enjoy the sound of closing off the bridge tone and opening up the neck tone, with more volume on the neck pickup.
